about

I wrote and recorded this before covid. Then, with plenty of spare time during covid, some friends and I made a film clip for it. And now it's out and into the world as the world works out whether it wants to go back to the office, if there's a job to go to.
It was intended as a light-hearted take on some of the funny little office things that go on but it feels a bit different now.
Maybe losing that lanyard job gives a different perspective. Maybe we place too much importance on a job to provide us with a sense of meaning and fulfilment as well as a financial return? Maybe a lot of lanyard jobs were unnecessary to begin with? Maybe we should just be grateful we're alive?
All these questions, and still the biggest question is who's buying cake for Hannah's birthday on Thursday?
Hope you enjoy the tune,
Rhys

lyrics

I wear a lanyard
And I have a swipe card
I use words and acronyms
But I don't know what they mean
Like ROI and KPI and FYI I don't know why
You need to Reply All to every email.

And I drink caffeinated beverages
So I need to get up every hour
And I don't care about your footy tips
I just think there's more we could talk about.

There's a girl called Hannah-With-A-Hyphen
And as far as I can tell her job is to look busy
And to walk really fast.
She's on the Social Committee
So I guess that explains why she's called another meeting
About who's buying cake.

And I don't mean to seem so negative
I'm thankful for the pay, and the free cake
But when I think back to my younger days
All those hopes and dreams seem so far away...

All my shirts are shrinking
And I've been thinking
Now that we all get to choose our own identity
I'm gonna be a Merman
And live under the sea
Eat fresh fish every day
And I'll forget about the office
Forget about the First World Tragedies
Take off my lanyard
Remember what it feels like to be free...
